Household Management
Your household is the shared space where everything in OneHaus comes together. All tasks, events, shopping lists, and inventory belong to your household, and every member can see and contribute to them.
Creating a Household
After signing in for the first time, you are guided through creating a household. Give it a name that your members will recognize, like "The Smiths" or "Flat 12B". You can also add an address and notes during setup to help members know they are in the right place. You automatically become the household owner.
Creating a household only takes a moment:
- Open OneHaus and sign in
- Tap Create Household
- Enter a household name
- Optionally add an address and notes
- Tap Create
Once your household is set up, you can start inviting others to join.
Joining with an Invite Code
If someone has already created a household, you can join using their invite code. Ask the household owner for the code, then enter it during setup. You will join as a member with access to everything in the household.
To join an existing household:
- Open OneHaus and sign in
- Tap Join a Household
- Enter the invite code provided by the owner
- Tap Join
You will see all tasks, events, shopping lists, and inventory immediately after joining.
Member Roles
Two roles exist in every household:
- Owner: Full control over the household. Can edit household settings, manage members, change roles, and remove members. The person who creates the household is the owner by default.
- Member: Full access to all features, including tasks, calendar, shopping, inventory, contacts, and chat. Cannot edit household settings or manage other members.
Both roles can create, edit, and complete items across every feature. The only difference is that owners have additional control over the household itself.
Managing Members
As an owner, go to Settings to view all household members. From there, you can:
- Change a member's role: Promote a member to owner or change an owner back to member.
- Remove a member: Tap on their name and select Remove. Removed members lose access to all household data immediately.
Only owners can perform these actions. If you are a member and need someone removed, ask a household owner to handle it.
Household Settings
Owners can update the following settings from the Settings page:
- Household name: Change the display name at any time. All members will see the updated name immediately.
- Allow joining: Toggle whether new members can join using the invite code. Turn this off once everyone has joined for added security. You can always turn it back on later if you need to invite someone new.
These settings affect the entire household, so only owners have permission to change them.
Leaving a Household
Members can leave a household at any time from Settings. Tap Leave Household and confirm your decision. You will lose access to all household data immediately.
If you are the only owner and want to leave, you must transfer ownership to another member first. This ensures the household always has at least one owner who can manage settings and members.
Privacy and Security
Your household data is private and encrypted. Only members of your household can see its contents. Here is how OneHaus keeps your household secure:
- Private by default: No one outside your household can view tasks, events, lists, or inventory.
- Controlled access: Turning off the "Allow joining" toggle prevents anyone from joining, even if they have the invite code.
- Immediate revocation: When a member is removed, their access ends right away.
For more on how OneHaus handles your data, see our Privacy Policy.
Tips
- Turn off "Allow joining" once all your members have joined. This prevents anyone from using the invite code unexpectedly. You can always re-enable it later.
- Use a household name that everyone recognizes. This helps members confirm they are joining the right household.
- Promote a second member to owner so that household management does not depend on a single person. If one owner is unavailable, the other can still manage settings and members.
- Add your household address during setup. Some features, like contacts and calendar events, work better when OneHaus knows your location.
Troubleshooting
Invite code not working Check that the "Allow joining" toggle is enabled in household settings. If it is turned off, the code will not accept new members. Ask the household owner to turn it back on.
Cannot remove a member Only owners can manage members. If you are a member and need someone removed, ask a household owner to handle it from Settings.
Need to transfer ownership If you are the only owner and want to leave, contact Support for help transferring ownership to another member.
Member not seeing updates Make sure the member has an active internet connection. OneHaus syncs in the background and whenever the app is opened, so changes from other members appear shortly after. Pull down to refresh if anything appears out of date.
