Moving checklist

The moving house checklist

Moving is one of the most stressful things a household does, mostly because so much has to happen in the right order and nothing can be forgotten. This checklist works backwards from your moving day, so the big jobs like booking movers and switching utilities happen with time to spare, and the moving-day essentials are ready when you need them.

Read through it here for free, tick off what applies, and use it as your plan. When you want the dates handled for you, open the same checklist as a guided pack in OneHaus and every task lands on your calendar at the right moment.

Start the long-lead jobs early. Booking a removal company and giving your utility suppliers your moving date both get harder, and more expensive, the longer you leave them. Aim to have movers booked around six weeks out and your electricity, gas, water and broadband transfers requested about a month before you go.

Leave the essentials box until last, and keep it with you. Chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks and your important documents should travel in a box that does not go on the van. On the day itself, photograph every meter at both the old and new home, and once you are in, find the water shut-off and fuse box and test the alarms before you unpack.

Moving House checklist FAQ

Around six to eight weeks before your moving day. That gives you time to book a removal company, request your utility transfers, set up mail forwarding and start packing non-essentials without a last-minute rush. This checklist counts down from moving day so you can see what to do when.

Take photos of the gas, electricity and water meters at both your old and new home so your final and opening bills are accurate. Keep your essentials box with you rather than on the van. Once you are in, locate the water shut-off and fuse box, and test the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Update your address with your bank, employer, insurer, GP or doctor, the electoral roll, your subscriptions and any delivery services, and set up mail forwarding to catch anything you miss. The checklist groups these together so you can work through them in one sitting.

Yes. In the OneHaus app the Moving House pack is shared across your household, so both of you see the same list, can assign tasks, and tick things off as they are done. Everyone stays on the same page through the whole move.
